While many people recognize the AKC (American Kennel Club) as a renowned dog show sponsor, most people do not realize that the AKC also provides dog insurance. Despite being known for its work with purebred breeds, the AKC pet insurance covers purebreds, hybrids, mixed breeds and even cats. The AKC believes that all dogs and cats should have the accessibility to pet insurance regardless of the breed of the animal. While some pet insurance companies charge more for certain breeds of dogs such at Rottweilers, Doberman pinchers, and pit bulls, AKC prefers to provide the same coverage at the same rates to all dogs.
What Does AKC Dog Insurance Cover
AKC has several different types of policies that cover injuries, illnesses or both. There is also a wellness policy that can be combined with the other policies to provide complete coverage for your pet. The AKC Pet Healthcare Plan will provide help to cover surgery, hospital stays, lab tests, and prescriptions. They also help to cover diagnostic tests like CT scans, x-rays, and MRIs. By adding the Wellness option, you can also get help in covering routine health care such as vaccinations, worming, flea control and even spaying and neutering. Dental cleaning is also covered on an annual basis. There are five levels of plans available in the AKC Pet Healthcare Plan. Examine the different plans to see what best suits your dog’s needs. Unfortunately, they do not cover pre-existing conditions.
Why Choose the AKC Pet Healthcare Plan
You should always compare coverage, deductible amounts and rates when choosing dog insurance. However, you also want to find a company that is reputable. The ACK Pet Healthcare Plan offers a choice of the amount of coverage, deductible, and the veterinarian of your choice. The AKC also offers to let you pay your payments on either a monthly or an annual basis. Reimbursements are made directly to you rather than to the veterinarian. This saves time waiting to the payment to go to the veterinarian to be forwarded to you. Visit their website to see if AKC dog insurance is the right choice for you.

I had this insurance inclusive of wellness plan. Yes it pays for dental, annual exam, etc. Not so much for illness as my experience demonstrated.
I could have paid that wellness stuff 10 (annual, dental, etc.) times over with everything the AKC did not pay in claims. I thought I had a quality product until the time came to utilize the “illness” portion.
The AKC have these loop holes and get out of paying the claims. This is after you have submitted the claim at least twice because the AKC allege they did not receive it – even when you have the proven fax confirmation.
Followed by this my experience was when separate dates of service were done on separate illnesses they threw it all into 1 incident and wouldn’t pay the diagnostics or hospitalization. TO be specific they denied a MRI of the brain which indicated a lesion and denied a separate hospitalization for pneumonia – stating they are related _ WHAT?!.
Next the doctors deemed it medical necessary to euthanize my sweet boy. The wellness plan is to cover that too. The AKC denied that as well.
The AKC only provided me with the delusion of coverage when it came to “illness and accident” portion of an AKC Wellness Policy.
The AKC does not cover genetic, diabetes, arthritis, kidney and various other items. My suggestion to anyone taking into consideration the AKC Pet Insurance is to read the fine print and realize just what you DON’T have with the AKC. I had 4 policies with this company and cancelled every one when it came time to actually have to use the “illness” portion of the plan and learn the money I am just throwing away because the AKC didn’t pay as they represented they would. Add the customer service which was rude, and clueless with have any intellectual conversation pertaining to the insurance product. They never got back to me as they said they would either.
I have changed my insurance to a provider who processes claims very promptly, in 10 days, does not have a per incident maximum, covers arthritis, genetic, congentivie conditions as well as kidney. Is knowledgeable, organized, and truly offers a quality product with quality customer service as well. Better than all of this I now have the piece of mind knowing my pups are now covered with a creditable provider.
Please read the VERY FINE PRINT and ask your questions at least twice with different representatives at the AKC to see if you will get the same answer. Honestly prior to finding my new provider I could have self funded these policies with less expense than what I incurred with the premium and unpaid claims – not to mention the emotional and mental anguish the AKC caused on top of the death of my poor pup.
Getting involved with the AKC Pet Insurance was a huge mistake for me!
