If you are as much of a pet lover as I am then VPI Vet Insurance is something that you need to know about. Everyone wants their pet companions to be assured of good health care and yet it’s important to try and contain costs as much as possible. The VPI Company gives you an affordable way to take care of most vet charges and there are several different plans that are available. Years ago there was not a real need for this kind of coverage because animal health care was fairly limited. Now with all of the advances and new technologies veterinarian science is almost on par with that for humans.
Here are some of the best features that I think are excellent regarding this pet insurance plan:
- Low cost
- Tailored policy plans
- Wide acceptance by vets throughout the nation
VPI offers insurance plans for almost every animal including dogs, cats, birds and those wily little reptiles. This insurance company has been in existence for almost 30 years and during this time they have had some changes to what types of plans they offer and the coverages involved. Today the policies are a little different according to which area of the country you live in, but they still are all very similar. Originally the idea was to decrease the number of animals that were being euthanized because owners were not able to afford the health care that was needed. In the 80s the VPI Vet insurance was used most often on emergency and accident care, but today the use has expanded to include regular health care, microchip implantation, heartworm prevention and other treatments.
While this plan offers a number of great options to save you money on your pet’s vet bills there are still some problems that should be noted. Some policy owners have found that some of the charges they thought should be covered are excluded if they are thought to involve a pre-existing condition. This would be understandable if pet owners were told this at the very beginning when their pet was first placed on one of the policies.
You have to get a checkup for your animal by a vet and they need a clean bill of health in order to be accepted. Sometimes there are genetic or pre-existing problems that are discovered at the onset. The VPI Vet insurance agents will tell you what they are covering and what conditions will not be covered at that time. However if health problems are discovered a year or two later there have been some problems getting the company to agree to reimburse these charges that have already been incurred. There have been a number of people who have complained that the company insists these new charges are somehow related to a pre-existing condition. Since a pet owner has to cover the vet charges up front they will be in a bind should the company refuse to pay the amount. Also the company has been known to be a little slow at times when it comes to reimbursing the covered charges, although they promise prompt service. Not everyone has run up against these problems but it is best to be prepared before making this pet insurance the one you choose.

I have VPI for my mixed breed terrier and AkC for my Springer and neither are great. They always have an excuse. I have found that if I appeal with AKC, they sometimes pay the claim, but VPI has never paid on appeal. They are always looking for an obscure reason not to pay. For example, if a dog has two ailments on a vet visit and one is covered and the other isn’t, they always attribute all treatment to the uncovered expense regardless of what is on the vet records. I have never even broken even with either policy but I keep them because they both SAY they are good for surgery, accidents, etc. – the really big expenses. I am afraid that no matter what is wrong with my dogs, the surgery won’t be covered. If anybody has a better solution or better policy, please let me know. Thanks

I’ve had my pomeranian on VPI since she was 2 months old. We’ve probably racked up $6000 in medical bills over the past 6 years – most of that for 2 bouts of pancreatic ailments – VPI paid off on about $4700 of that. That’s better than MY insurance! I’ve always gotten my claims settled promptly.
