How to Make Your Puppy Stop Drooling

October 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Do you have a puppy that seems to constantly be drooling on everything? Puppies by nature are prone to drool a lot, and it can be very frustrating when you are trying to wean your puppy of the behavior, especially when you have company or small children in the house. The amount of drool that a puppy produces and the frequency of the drooling vary greatly among breeds of dogs, and some kinds of dogs are much more prone to excessive drooling than others.

So what do you do to help make your puppy stop drooling? One of the first things that you may want to do if your dog seems to be drooling excessively is to check their mouths and make sure that they do not have any kind of foreign objects lodged somewhere that could be causing the excess drooling.

Another thing that you can do to help stop your dog from excessive drooling is to watch how much and when they eat. Sometimes dogs can drool more often if they are hungry or if they are not feeling well. If your dog got into some kinds of human food, he or she may begin to drool excessively so you will want to watch for that carefully.

Sometimes dogs also can start to drool more often when they are riding in the car, so the best thing you can do is to either keep the windows rolled down a little bit, and not feed them too much right before you head out of the door.

Some dog owners find that if they let the dog ride in the front seat with them instead of riding in the backseat, they often will drool less often. If you alter the way that you feed your dog, and how they ride in the car with you and they still seem to drool a lot, you may want to consider other actions to help reduce the effects of drooling.

One of the things that you may want to try is keeping old towels around you and your dog, that way you can at least clean up the drool from your dog’s mouth before it lands on the furniture or floor and makes a mess on anything. You also may want to think about putting a bib around your puppy’s neck to catch the drool. This can help when they are little and can not seem to stop drooling no matter what you try to do.

You should keep in mind that excessive drooling can be the result ot gum problems or problems with your puppy’s teeth so you may want to talk to your vet about the dental health of your puppy and see if there is anything wrong with your puppy’s teeth or gums that may be causing them to drool so much.

Excessive drooling in your puppy may also be a result of your puppy having an upset stomach so if that seems to be the case you will want to experiment with the types of food you give him or her and also how often or how much you are feeding them.

There could be certain kinds of food that are not as easy on your puppy’s stomach and causing them to feel upset therefore drooling a lot more. You can also talk to your vet if you feel that your puppy is drooling way too much, as it could be something to do with the particular kind of dog or breed of dog that you have that your vet could help answer your questions about.
