Having a dog is one of the most pleasant experiences a person can have. There’s nothing quite like having a furry little friend waiting for you at the door after a hectic day at the office. However, as awesome and wonderful as owning a dog is, it does have a couple of drawbacks, but with the correct training these can be dealt with. One of these drawbacks is when you come home from a hard day of work only to find your furniture and shoes chewed and scratched into shreds and bits. If this is you, then now is the time to put to death the chew monster and train your dog not to destroy your things.

It’s important to realize that a dog who chews things is pretty normal. Don’t be alarmed by a lot of chewing, just try to correct the problem and get the dog to chew on the correct objects instead of your expensive Italian leather shoes. Once you’ve trained your dog what is ok to chew and what isn’t, you’ll be able to leave your dog at home unattended without worrying about the condition of your valuables.

Dogs chew things up due in large part to their instinct. If you try to completely stop your dog from chewing anything, you’ll most likely fail. The key to successfully putting to death the chew monster is to get your dog to chew on certain items that you allow him to chew on. Go to your local pet store, purchase a few different types of toys, and see which one your puppy likes to chew on the most. This method alone can sometimes completely change a dog’s behavior, so if this works just go with it.

You can also try moving your dog into a smaller living space. You may want to consider blocking off certain areas of the house so that the dog does not have access to the items you have stored in that particular area. This works great if you are not going to be home all day and have no way of checking up on your pet.

Another option you have to help break your dog from chewing is to get him or her to hate the taste of whatever object they keep chewing on. There are a number of safe products you can purchase to help you accomplish this task. Once you purchase the anti-chewing product all you have to do is apply it directly to the surface. As soon as the dog begins to chew, he will be greeted with a rather bitter flavor that tastes awful. A few times of getting this, your dog will be broken in rather quickly.

You may want to look into purchasing bones for your dog to snack on as well. If you find these to be too expensive you can try bones that are made up of nylon fibers. These kinds of bones come in edible and non edible kinds. The non edible bones are filled with meat flavors, including chicken, which tastes good to a dog.

Remember not to get too upset if you come home and find the house a mess all because of your dog. Keep in mind that they have to be trained properly in order to stop repeating bad behavior. It may be a good idea for you to reward your dog with treats whenever he does what he is supposed to so that you reinforce good behavior. It may take some time, but after it’s all said and done, the process will have been worth it.
