One of the most fun parts of being a pet owner is choosing a name for your new friend. It can be difficult to be original these days as there are so many names already taken, and no one wants their pet to have a plain typical name. Everyone wants to pick unique pet names for their animals that reflect their animal’s personality. That’s what makes naming a pet so much fun!
Choosing a name for your pet is a very important part of the pet owning process. This name will be stuck to your pet for the rest of its natural life, so make sure you really put some thought into this process. You want the name of your pet to reflect their looks and their personality. You wouldn’t name a pit bull Fluffy, would you? That wouldn’t even sound right. The name doesn’t match the personality or looks of the pet.
One of the first tips to keep in mind when choosing unique pet names is to make sure that your pet can distinguish his or her own name from your regular commands. For example, naming your pet Joe, may confusing the pet with the term “no” and will end up getting your pet’s wires crossed.
Keep Pet Names Short
You’ll also want to choose unique pet names that are short, sweet, and to the point. Try to keep your pet’s name within one or two syllables. This makes the name easy to recognize and easy for the pet to recall. This also helps for when your dog is older and his hearing isn’t as good as it used to be. A simple name will make it easy for him or her to make out against all the other noises going on. You should also be thinking about whether or not you would feel comfortable shouting your dog’s name out in public. If the answer to that is no, then you may want to try going with another name to avoid the embarrassment.
It may be a good idea to wait a few days after getting your new pet before choosing a name. Take a few days to spend some time getting to know your pet and get familiar with his appearance. Play with your pet and see their reaction to different types of games and toys. Watch them and the things they do and you’ll soon find yourself inspired to give your pets unique pet names.
If you’re still having some trouble coming up with a unique name, you may want to consider watching some of your favorite movies and TV shows for inspiration. Many people have a favorite fictional character that they name their pets after. It may be a certain character from a movie, or maybe a character from a favorite childhood book that you read a long time ago. The possibilities and options you have open to you are almost limitless, so think hard and carefully before choosing a name for your furry friend.
While it may seem difficult to find unique pet names for your beloved new friends it only takes a little creative to spark your imagination. Remember, your pet will be stuck with this name permanently and you’ll be stuck calling him or her by that name. Make sure that it is a name you are proud to say out loud and not a cheap novelty name that may leave you turning red at the park. Try to make calling your pet by his name a pleasurable experience for both him and you, and not a negative experience that makes your pet cringe.

A great way to come up with pet names is to think people who inspire you and see if any of their names are suitable.
Just don’t choose the name of a living relative or friend - it’s too risky.
Your friend or relative may not like to have a hamster or Pug named after them. And what happens if you have a major falling out, or the pet dies…too emotional.
