Removing Dog Poop is Vital

November 26th, 2008 · No Comments

There was a time when dog handlers always cleaned up after their dogs. It was a common site to see the handlers walk around with poop bags and a scooper. However, in the past decade, the majority of dog owners just do not seem to care. There is dog poop everywhere. The large explosion of dogs in urban areas has meant that many of them simply are allowed to roam the city without care. Some days it is difficult to find a clean place on the grass to sit. Almost every park is inundated with dog poop. And these complaints are universal.

This predicament for city dwellers has not gone unnoticed. Recently the news media has hyped up concerns about dog pollution and its health effects. Some reporters claim that dog poop is responsible for the increase in common colds, headaches, and dizziness and so on. To make matters worse, the skateboarders have also blamed dog poop for their health problems and their falls.

Don’t Blame Your Dog for Pooping

Well, first of all, the dog problem started when owners simply stopped being responsible.

It is hardly fair to blame a dog for pooping on the sidewalk. Where else is a stray dog supposed to poop? As far as acquiring medical disease from dog poop, this is rare. Dog poop from healthy dogs is not infectious to either dogs or humans. While some dogs may have parasites, only other dogs are at risk for acquiring these parasites from contaminated feces.

Most humans have little or no risk from acquiring any infections from dogs. There is always a chance that a child may contaminate him/herself with dog poop. But this argument also holds for having pets at home. Basic hygiene should be taught to all children. And again the responsibility lies on the parent.

Dog Poop is a Social Matter

In most cases, dog poop is a social and cosmetic concern. It may get infested with insects and worms but is not a medical concern. The other reason why dog poop is a problem is that it often reeks of bad odor. However, this is entire problem has been started by neglect of the dog owner. If all the dog owners scoop up the poop, then we will have no arguments. Rather than blame the dogs, one has to realize that the problem resides with the owners.

Many dog owners have simply become lazy and irresponsible. While most will scoop up the dog poop in their own back yard, they are reluctant to pick it up when the dog poops elsewhere.

Many states have poop abandonment laws and there are monetary fines. However, this law has been difficult to reinforce because the incident must be witnessed and many times the offenders won’t divulge their names to the officer. And now to make matters worse, many localities have started to ban dogs from certain parks.

Dog Waste is a Dilemma for All Pet Lovers

All pet lovers do understand the dilemma of poop and they also do not want to infringe on the rights of non pet owners. While some dog owners are irresponsible, this is not applicable to all dog owners. The sole responsibility of dog poop resides with the owner. If the owner does his /her job, then we will have one less mundane thing to argue about.
