So you are looking at a puppy for sale or have just purchased a new puppy and want to spend as much time as possible together and show them the outdoors. Try some of the following activities and have fun together.
1. Puppy classes
Puppy classes are a great place to start. Your puppy will get to socialize with dogs of all different ages while they learn obedience and basic commands at the same time. You can enroll your puppy in a short course which is generally 6 weeks long or other obedience schools allow you to enrol for a full year. Enrollment costs are quite reasonable and worth the money. Your dog will learn how to behave in public and meet many other people and dogs. Once your dog has mastered basic obedience commands you may like to give your dog a go at agility.
2. Agility
Agility is becoming a more and more popular activity for dogs. It is lots of fun for both you and your dog. Agility involves your dog running through an obstacle course consisting of weaving poles, jumps, tunnels and ramps. Agility is fast paced and well suited to dogs with lots of energy. Owners can enter their dogs into competitions or just have fun running the obstacle with their dog.
3. Dog Beaches
Not all dogs naturally like the water but taking your dog regularly to the beach is a good start in getting them accustomed to it. There are many dog exercise beaches set up by your local council. Here dogs can run freely together of the lead.
At first your puppy may need some encouragement to get into the water. Carry your puppy into the water and support him under his belly while he begins to doggy paddle. For the first few attempts make sure you support him all the way to the shore. Hopefully your dog will become more confident in time and learn to go into the water on their own. Some dogs can be encouraged in by throwing their favourite toy into the water. As with children, always watch your dog when their in the water.
4. Hiking
Dogs love to walk and get out and about with their owners. If your dog is fit and healthy with no bone abnormalities then hiking may be the activity for them. Your dog will love the environment and all the smells that come with it. Depending on you on your dogs fitness level there are many distances and environments to try. Many national parks have trails already set up for you to follow. When hiking always ensure your dog is kept on a lead to avoid them getting into trouble with the rough terrain or wildlife. Ensure you have plenty of water for you and your best friend.
5. Dog events
Look out for animal welfare organizations and your local council holding fundraising events for you and your dog. These events are a fun day out for all. It is a chance for you and your dog to enjoy fun exhibitions like sheep dog trials, dog dress up parades, face painting and much more all while supporting a good cause. There are always plenty of competitions to enter and prizes to be won. There is also plenty of friendly people about offering their advice on any dog matters you may have.
Being active and participating in dog activities forms a strong bond between you and your dog, helps keeps you and your dog healthy and eliminates boredom which can lead to a number of unwanted bad behaviours. Remember to just have fun!
