There are many common household items around your home that can be harmful or fatal to your puppy. Below is a list of household dangers that you should be mindful of. It is important that you remove or keep your puppy away from these at all times.
1. Poisonous Plants
Ivy, Foxglove, Holly, Azalea, Birds of paradise, Aloe vera, Mother in laws tongue, Aparagus fern, Plumosa fern, many of the Lily species, Nightshade, Yucca, Umbrella tree, Cycads, Oleander, Syngonium and Rosary Pea. Bulb plants including Daffodils and Tulips.
2. Harmful Foods
Many foods that humans eat can be harmful to your dog. Always keep food locked away in the pantry and only feed your dog pet food. Many people think it is ok to give your dog scraps or leftovers but this can be harmful to your dog if given the wrong foods.
Harmful foods include: Macadamia nuts, Onions, Grapes, Apple seeds.
3. Pesticides and Insecticides
Rat poison, Snail baits, Roach baits and Ant powder.
There are many effective products that are safe for your pets and you should aim to purchase these whenever possible.
4. Chemicals
Anti-freeze, Paint and wall strippers, Battery acid and Petrol.
5. Pools and pool covers
Not all dogs are good swimmers and they could get in real trouble if they happen to fall in your pool. Ensure your pool is always fenced off and securely locked even if the pool is covered with a pool cover. Dogs can still get trapped underneath the cover and drown.
6. Electrical cords
Puppies love to chew things including electrical cords. To avoid your dog from chewing these always ensure your puppy is constantly monitored when in the home and have the appliances are switched off when not in use.
7. Children’s Toys
Children’s toys are not suitable for puppies so never give your puppy children’s toys to play with. Children’s toys such as marbles are often small and your puppy can choke on them. Many toys are also filled with small pellets which can also be harmful to your dog.
Please beware careful to keep your puppy away from all of these common household items. Puppy’s are curious by nature so make sure they do not get access to any of these nasty items.
