When you are looking to purchase pet insurance for Fido, there are two fairly inexpensive types of insurance to consider. The first is called emergency pet insurance and the second is accident insurance.
Emergency Pet Insurance
Emergency pet insurance is a policy that you can buy for a flat rate per year, normally less than $25 per pet. Most companies will require that Fido has a microchip. While each company’s policy is different, most companies will cover the cost (most are around $250) for recovery if Fido ever goes missing. The company will cover things like posters and a reward amount. Since Fido is micro chipped, the company will be able to call you once Fido has been turned into a vet or a clinic where they scan for microchips. If Fido is taken to a clinic/shelter or a vets office while he is missing and needs medical attention, the emergency pet insurance will cover up to a certain dollar amount (normally $3,000). Basically, Fido broke his leg while he was lost, the insurance will cover the cost.
Accident Insurance
Accident insurance is a little more expensive than emergency pet insurance. Prices range due to Fido’s breed. Normally the monthly cost starts at about $15. Normally the more expensive the insurance cost, the more things that the insurance covers. Each company will cover different things, so make a checklist of things that are important that you want it to cover. To get the insurance as cheap as possible, make your deductible be higher. In addition, you will get a discount on each additional pet. Some companies even give discounts for things like if they are micro chipped and if they have been spayed/neutered.
Also, call your car insurance company. Personally, I pay an additional $5 per vehicle premium and if I am in a car accident, it will cover up to $1,000 of vet care for my dog. While it is not the greatest insurance, my dogs love going for their car rides, and it is a pretty cheap cost for peace of mind.
Also call the human resource department of your employer. They may have a discount with one of the larger pet insurance companies. Also before purchasing any insurance, look online for a discount code. While it may only be 10%, if you are pre-paying for a year, it will make a big different in your total cost.
