How to Make Your Puppy Eat

If you have a new puppy and are having problems getting him to eat, you may be wondering what you can do to make him want to eat. Sometimes puppies do not always eat right away when you bring them home, especially if they are weaned from their mothers early, or are nervous about their new surroundings. Puppies also are often very excitable and full of energy, and food is not always their first priority.

Puppy eating habits

So what can you do to make your puppy eat? The first thing you can do to help your puppy eat is to set up a feeding schedule that you can be consistent with every day. Whether you got your new puppy from a pet store or right from a breeder, you should always try to find out what the feeding schedule was like their first when you bring your puppy home and try to stick as close to that as possible for the first few days after you bring your puppy home. This will help teach the puppy to eat at certain times everyday and can help create regular outings to go to the bathroom as well.

Best Dog Food

Another helpful idea to make your puppy eat is to try to stick with whatever dog food that he was previously eating before he came to you. You can switch after a few days, and if your puppy is not eating at all, you may need to try a new kind of food right away. For the most part however, you should try to stick with the same kind of food that he was eating in order for him to not have too many changes at once. Puppies have a lot of new territory to explore when they come to your home, so you should try to create an environment in which your puppy feels safe and happy and can have some familiar things from his previous home.

Trying a new type of food

When you do try a new kind of food for your puppy, you should make sure that it has the right formula that growing puppies need. Make sure that it is has enough vitamins, minerals, and protein and is fortified with calcium and other nutrients. If you have other grown dogs in the house or cats, try to keep your puppy away from their food for a while. Puppies have very sensitive stomachs and they can get ill if they get into other pet’s food, especially if it is too strong a formula for them. Also, it is very important to make sure that your puppy does not get into any people food and that no one feeds him table scraps. Puppies can get ill off of eating food like people food when they are very young, and their digestive systems do not know how to handle it.

If you have tried everything and your puppy will still not eat any of the food that you find him, you should contact your vet to rule out any potential problems or sicknesses that your puppy may have. The vet may be able to recommend a type or different formula of food that will agree with your puppy and that he will enjoy. You can also try feeding your puppy some kinds of treats, but make sure that they are made for puppies to eat and do not get into the habit of feeding them too many treats and bones, especially while they are very young.

Puppies often do not always eat a lot when you first bring them home, but you need to make sure that you watch your puppy closely, because they need to eat enough to account for how active they are and you need to make sure that your puppy is healthy.

I got my yorkie from the breeder on Fed. 13, 2010 and she came with Puppy Chow. I tried feeding her and she didn’t eat so I thought she didn’t like it. then I bought her Iams puppy food. she would just nibble on it then walk away. so I free fed and hand fed her but would eat a little only so after a week I switch to Gravy Train and she’s still doing the same thing. is it too late to go back and the breeder for the feeding schedule? I need help she haven’t been eating for two weeks now.

because of a yorkies size the MUST eat or the will die feed good puppy food such as eukanuba and let soften in wrm/hot water and canned puppy food such as ceasars and mash and mix it up you may have to handfeed for a little while if all else fails give the dog nurturall-c puppy balanced milk replacer and take the puppy to the vet if you dont want to loose it

I have had my yorkie for about two weeks now and I still can’t get him to eat anything. I’ve tried about 5 or 6 different types of food and all he does is either lick it or completely ignore it. I have taken him to the vet twice now but still no progress. I’m desperate now to get him to eat. I try force feeding and he just spits it out. Right now I’ve been giving him Nutri-Cal to keep his sugar from dropping which is what the vet gave me until he’s eating well. The thing is he can’t live off Nutri-Cal forever. I’m really desperate. If anyone has any advice please help. I would really hate for my puppy to die because he’s not eating.

My Yorkie was fine when we first got home, but had a dry hacking cough shortly after w got her. I”ve taken her to the vet 3 times now. She is on an antibiotic and cough suppressant and now she is refusing to eat. She was very playful, but now she is disinterested in everything. I am wondering if it might be the meds. Any suggestions on how to get her to eat?

I got my puppy a few days before Christmas, she was born November 9th. She is a rottweiler and German Shepard mix. I have tried feeding her everything that she would be able to eat and she still wont eat anything i give her, no matter how i prepare it. The only thing she will eat and tries to eat is the cat food, but i don’t want to feed her that because it doesn’t have the right nutrients in it she needs. What can i do to get her to eat…?

I have a puppy husky. When I first brought him home I gave him a 3:1 ratio of iams to science diet. He ate about a cup of that mixture 4 times a day like the te advised. Then when we moved into a new place, he refused to eat. I knew he liked the brand food so what I did was isolate him and myself in a nice sized room and just sat there for as long ad it took for me to see him finish it. Some times it took a couple of hours. I would play with him when he was uninterested but kept shaking the dish to catch his interest. I know not everyone has a couple of hours to spare, but maybe try isolating yourself with them for a bit. Keep them active and interested in their food. Making eating enjoyable for them.
