If you ask any cat owner, you will no doubt find that one of the biggest complaints anyone has about owning a cat as a pet is the litter box odor. There is something so potent and strong about the smell of dirty cat litter that it seems to linger in your home and can be very difficult to remove. Unless your cat only goes to the bathroom outside, you have probably wondered what you can do to eliminate or reduce the odor from the cat litter box.
Cat Litter Box Smell
There are certain things that you can do to help reduce the odor of the cat litter box in your home. One of the easiest things you can do is to make sure that the litter box is clean at all times. It is much better to clean the litter out after every deposit that your cat makes in it then to wait until it is full or even has a few deposits in it.
The longer you wait to clean it out, the stronger the odor is that fills the area. Another problem that can happen if you wait too long to clean the litter box is that the cat may not like the strong smell of the litter box and choose a new location to go to the bathroom.
Litter Boxes For Cats
Make sure that if you have more than one cat that you have enough litter boxes in your home and enough litter in the litter boxes. Cats do not like to go to the bathroom when there litter box is full, especially if there are more than one cat using the box.
If you don’t have enough litter in the box, the urine can leak through to the bottom of the litter box and be hard to remove once the odor is set in. You should also clean the litter box out entirely from time to time to help reduce the smell that can build up in the litter box. Cleaning it out and completely drying it out before adding new litter can help freshen up the box.
There are also different kinds of litter and deodorant products that you can use in the litter box. Some litters are designed for multiple cats and have more powerful ingredients to fight odor than others. There are also powders available that you can use to shake into the litter to eliminate the odor.
These powders can be used and will not affect the way that the cat uses the litter, and should not deter the cat from using the box. You may want to watch your cat carefully if you do change litter products or start using an additional odor fighter in the litter box to make sure that your cat is not affected by the change in the litter box.
There are cat litter box liners that you can try that usually have some deodorizing effects and can make cleaning the litter box a lot easier, as long as you do not wait until the litter box is too full to remove the liner. Keeping the odor from your cat’s litter box to a minimum is possible, but it does take some work and extra effort on your part to make sure that you properly clean the litter box on a regular basis. Your cat will also thank you for the cleaner and fresher smelling litter box.
