Finding Pet Insurance for Birds

Pet owners nationwide find themselves lucky that more and more insurance companies are beginning to add pet insurance coverage and health plans to their program palette. They have found that pet owners want to take care of their pets in a way that wasn’t common just 15 years ago. When a pet got sick or was injured you went to see the VET and if that didn’t help that was about it and especially if your finances were a little tight. Animal hospitals do cost an arm and a leg.

Pet Insurance for BirdsThat is why the owners of cats and dog started to ask their insurance companies to cover their pets as well as pet is a part of the family now. But while dogs and cats are now possible to cover through most major insurance companies what do people owning e.g. pet birds do?

Currently there aren’t that many options for you as a pet bird owner. So far there is only one major company offering pet insurance for birds and that is VPI. They have what they call the “VPI Avian & Exotic Plan for Birds”.
This is what their website states:

Birds make beautiful and loving pets. Our VPI Avian & Exotic Pet Plan is intended to meet the specific needs of birds and ensure they’ll live a long and happy life.

Birds are also vulnerable to illness and health risks. The VPI Avian & Exotic Pet Plan covers major medical treatments and surgeries for accidents and illness, minor treatments as well as lab fees, prescriptions, x-rays and hospitalization. Birds are also covered for self-mutilation, feather picking, egg binding surgery, neoplasia surgery and more. With a VPI policy, you’ll be able to afford the best care for your pets and keep your costs low”.

On top of that you can add their “supplemental and routine care coverage” to your bird pet insurance for a yearly fee of $99. I won’t go into details about this coverage but amongst others it covers blood testing and nail and wing trims. You can find out more by visiting them here.

Had you been living in the UK you would have had an easier task finding pet insurance for birds as several insurance companies such as E&L and Exotic Direct are offering these services. But with the current trend of exotic and rare pet animals becoming more and more popular I think we’re going to see more and more insurance companies offering coverage for all kinds of exotic animals, including birds.
