Dog Neutering – State Sponsored Neutering

OK, if you have a dog that is already neutered then here is your only time to feel guilty. Neutering of a dog involves the removal of part or all of the reproductive organs usually just enough to stop puppy production. Ouch!

Now you feel bad for your castrated pooch but the guilt should end there as think of the problems you could be avoiding with unwanted litters and more additions to the epic problem of finding adopters and overcrowding animal shelters and sometimes eventual euthanasia. Not so guilty now huh?

Dog NeuteringAnimal shelters are over run with the off shots of unneutered and unspayed bitches and although to some it seems harsh and drastic how else can the population of dogs be controlled.

Animal shelters and rescue centers have been conducting an aggressive campaign encouraging sterilization of dogs and most even automatically neuter stray dogs that are taken into their care.

If you are still feeling guilty about having Winston’s bits chopped around with then maybe for a lot more money you can consider laser surgery. Regarded as somewhat less painful for the dog while in recovery.

Who gains?

The end result is usually beneficial to the owner if not the dog but the dog is not going to be paying out maintenance to his offspring so he really doesn’t get any choice.

Some debate it but the potential harm to the dog that neutering can cause is not anywhere near the harm that an unsterilized dog can bring by leaving his legacy of countless offspring with uncertain fate.

No pup policy

Dog NeuteringClaims are made that by affecting the hormones that drive dogs into being the Romeos, they are adversely affecting the dog’s development of dogs neutered before sexual maturity.

But ask yourself as a later day domesticated dog owner whose dog lives with a family of humans. What does he need to be a perfect testosterone filled species for?

The advantages far outnumber the disadvantages. They are less inclined to roam and usually prevent dominance issues within your household making him a more trusted family member around children.

It usually ends any kind of scent marking. I stress usually as testosterone is still produced and with a more assertive dominant dog he may retain some of these ways of old including roaming. But at least he won’t be fathering any unwanted pups.

It’s my doggy and I will breed if I want to

Maybe you’re unsure about whether you want to let your dog lose the ability to breed. Maybe you have a bitch and would simply just love to see the puppies from your dogs. Well that’s fine as long as you are fully aware of all the consequences of that decision.

Remember they will produce possibly 6 puppies. How many puppies can you take on when you already have dogs? That’s a lot of extra food over possibly 15 years and extra vet charges and a lot more disruption and training.

So it’s not like having a single addition to your household, you’re talking 6 additions maybe. Then what do you do?

Dog NeuteringDo you know 5 people that want a dog after you have picked out your one favorite puppy, what fate beholds the other 5? Most cannot honestly say that they can find 5 other potential owners.

So what then do you do? Take them to the shelter? Then you have simply allowed the problem to expand and given the shelter another worry to re-house.

So before you start making noises about freedom for the right to make up my own mind, as to the welfare of my dog, then think. Yes you should have the right but does having the right make you responsible?
