Dog Diarrhea Treatment

Like any other living thing, dogs can, and sometimes do, suffer from Diarrhea. The reasons for this can vary, just as they do in humans. In many cases, home dog diarrhea treatment can take care of the problem without you having to haul poor Fido off to the vet.

The moving of the animal itself can be problematic when they have this condition, as you will either have to put them in a carry cage, or have someone wrap their back end in a towel and hold them while you drive.

There are many things that can be done at home, listed below are just a few.

Observe The Animal:

Dog Diarrhea TreatmentHow long has the doggy diarrhea been going on? Are there other things going on like vomiting, loss of energy or appetite?

If only for a day or so then it could be something the dog ate or got into.

Check around carefully to make sure they could not have gotten into chemicals that would harm them. If they have been given too much human food this can be a problem, and the simple removal of access to the treats, along with plenty of fresh water and kibble should take care of the problem. If you suspect poisoning, take the dog to the doctor.

Pick a Treatment:

If this does not end the diarrhea, then the addition of a Pro-biotic powder to their water, in accordance with the directions on the package, should help stop the problem.

These are not the human pro-biotics you can get at the pharmacy on the corner these are just for animals. There are several good brands available either at your vet’s or online. http://www.dogdiarrhea.org/treat-dog-diarrhea.html or http://www.purinaveterinarydiets.com are two places to look for this. Pepto bismol at 1 ml. or 5 mg of Loperamide Immodium to 10 pounds of weight can be used up to 3 times a day.

As with any medication, consult with your vet to make sure you are using it properly and that your pet does not have a condition that prohibits their use.

After Treatment:

A simple bland diet for a day to two to let your animal recover, and their insides calm down, should get them back in the pink of health.

Then you can resume their normal diet. If your dog is still having diarrhea, then it is time to call the vet and see if there is anything else, you can do before you take the pet into the office. Not all types of diarrhea are treatable at home.

Some can be caused by parasites or bacterial infections. In these cases, the only way to diagnose and treat the problem is to utilize your veterinarian.

Prevention is the Key:

The safest way to prevent dog diarrhea is to remember that they should not be fed human food, instead feed them foods specifically made for them. If you do not like what you find in the stores, you can always make their food at home.

Just keep it simple, no spices or extra fat, limit salt (if any) and vegetables. Bland meat, poultry, or fish, well cooked with some plain rice or oats makes a wonderful homemade pet food, and can be stored in the fridge or freezer for later use. Once again, common sense is your key rule to a happy dog.
