Stop the Noise! When and How to use a Dog Barking Collar

Dogs bark. It is a fact of life and there is not much we can do about it. Excessive barking is another story, and there is something we can do about that. Two-thirds of the dogs that have used a dog barking collar have had success. Knowing when and how to use the collar will greatly increase not only the chances for success, but the effectiveness of the training.

How does a Dog Barking Collar work?

These collars are fitted with sensors that will sense the vibrations of your dog’s vocal cords and the sounds when he barks. The sensors set off a response that will startle your dog slightly in one of three ways, and get him to stop the barking. Figuring out what it is that causes your dog to bark will help you determine which collar is best suited for your situation.

Some Reasons your Dog is Barking

Obviously there are times you will want your dog to bark, it is the non necessary barking we want to put a stop to. A dog can be like a child, if they are bored or lonely they try to get attention, for a dog that means to bark. If you do nothing to stop this type of barking it will become a habit to your dog. If you give your dog some type of reward, a treat or attention, when they bark it will make them do it more for the reward. Some dogs may have come from other homes where they were not treated well and are scared, skittish or even psychologically damaged, causing them to bark in fear. A new dog, or puppy, may just need to know who the boss is.

Types of Dog Barking Collars

There are three different responses available in a dog barking collar. Each type has about the same results if used for the right reason. A dog that has been abused or is skittish and scared would be best with a collar that doesn’t startle them. A citronella spray collar will give off a small blast of citronella in front of the dog. Dogs dislike the smell and it will cause them to stop barking to get away from it. A new puppy, or even adult dog, that needs to know who is in charge will do well with a collar that emits a sharp noise when barking is sensed.

These collars can be automatic or manual so you can control when to have the noise emitted. An older dog that needs to be retrained or made to learn bad habits will have the best results with the stimulation collars. These collars give off a little shock, like from static electricity, when barking is sensed.

As a dog owner you owe it to your dog to make sure you are both happy with things. Knowing when, how, and why to use a dog barking collar will make the relationship between you and your canine friend more pleasant for both of you.
