Ideally they should be close to the house so that they can access the house when they want to. Can be weather proof but don’t have to be as the cat can always come inside in the rain but with enough imagination you can create places within the enclosure where she can go and keep dry as we all know how much cats hate water.
Of course the option is there to put a roof over her enclosure and such decisions will probably be dictated by budget. You can keep it basic it or turn it into a wonderland of cat trees and pipes for the cat to explore.
Much is dependent on the size of your property, budget and if building your own, your expertise. If your place is small then a cat enclosure can still be made accordingly.
They come in readymade form which can be expensive or you can buy plans to make one but best of all is to design and make your own. If you’re a little out of your depth then why not self design it with the help of a carpenter.
